Oak Park Demo, Friday, July 31, 2009
The Annual Oak Park Demo 2009 was again a huge success and deeply appreciated by students and staff alike. With the normal summer weather always threatening to "rain on our parade," we packed up the equipment at 8:00 AM, and traveled to Oak Park School. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we were met with an additional challenge of no A/C in the gym. The summer staff were kind enough to provide floor fans to help us keep cool, but it was rather unbearable to say the very least. Set-up took about 30 minutes followed by course familiarization for all dog/handler teams prior to the arrival of our audience.
The kids and adults cheered and clapped as Susan, Linda and Barb gave a running commentary on the show. After all agility runs were completed, several dogs showed off their latest tricks followed by the Therapy Dog session. It is a wonder that some of these remarkable dogs have any hair left, as many hands reached out to pet and to hug! Some kids even had the opportunity to become instant trainers!
This year we had our largest turn-out of volunteers ever...17 in all, plus many of us ran multiple dogs. After the show, the equipment was loaded, returned, and unloaded at SOTC all before 2:00 PM when the daily RAINS started. Many thanks to Eileen with her van and trailer for hauling all of our equipment, and to ALL the dog/handler teams who gave up several hours of their day to bring some joy and happiness to some very special kids.
The demo for 2010 is already in the planning stages, and will be held during the month of June. More details will be provided as we get closer. Please plan on joining us.
This is an event that truly makes a DIFFERENCE in our community.
